In earlier history, the study of astrology (which is the search for meaning in the sky) was considered a scholarly tradition. It was first developed in Babylonia over 2,500 years ago. In addition, it was widely accepted as being legitimate in both the political and academic contexts. At the time, it was associated with the study of astronomy, alchemy, meteorology, and medicine. However, by the end of the 17th century, new scientific concepts began to question any soundness or validity to astrology.

As skepticism grew, the emphasis on astrology faded and then was eventually rejected by the scientific community. The basic reasoning behind the rejection was that there was no sound mechanism by which to measure whether or not the position of heavenly bodies, such as the stars, moons and planets, could affect people and/or events on Earth. All the same, the impact of astrology and its study are in evidence throughout the centuries. The Mayans used astrology to predict many occurrences of events that would happen throughout the ages on Earth. Even the Egyptians used astrology in the building of their pyramids. Evidence of astrology has been found in past Roman history, Gaelic history, Greek history, Chinese/Asian history and Indian history.

Having taken a back seat in the scientific community for a couple of centuries, astrology saw a rebirth of popularity during the 19th century which was known as a period of the revival of spiritualism, as well as the New Age of philosophy. Finally, in the 20th century, the media again bolstered its popularity by including daily horoscopes of the Zodiac in newspapers which people clamored to read every day. There are 12 signs in the Zodiac that basically run from mid-month to mid-month. The 12 Zodiac signs are:

Whether astrological occurrences actually affect man and the planet still remains a topic of debate in the scientific world today. However, as a fun part of “science,” knowing the astrological signs, referred to as the Zodiac, and the basic understanding that most people have of it and in which many people will base their relationships on, their careers on, where they live and what they do is an interesting concept to follow.
