Spanish Difficult Review Quiz - Grammar - Verbs Olympics! (Answers)
1. Miguel y Davíd TOMARON el dinero y CORRIERON.
[ ] they will take, they will run
[ ] they took, they run
[x] they took, they ran
[ ] they take, you ran
This sentence reads: Michael and David took the money and ran. Next you need to determine the pronoun that can replace Michael and David. That would be they. The verbs are both in the past tense which means that the first, second and last answers can be eliminated as they each show different tenses. The third answer is the correct tense and shows the correct pronoun.
2. Él BEBIÓ la leche y luego él COMIÓ las galletas.
[ ] he believed, he came
[x] he drank, he ate
[ ] he beacons, he commits
[ ] he became, he carried
This sentence reads: He drank milk and then ate cookies. The pronoun for both verbs has been given, i.e., he. The verbs are both in the past tense. You also now know that bebió means drank and comió means ate. The second answer is, therefore, the correct answer.
3. Helen PONDRÁ las flores en la mesa y luego IRÁ a casa.
[ ] Helen will put, she will go
[ ] she puts, she goes
[ ] Helen pondered, she went
[x] she will put, she will go
This sentence reads: Helen will put the flowers on the table and then she will go home. Next you need to determine which pronoun can replace Helen. That would be she. The correct answer must show the pronoun form which means that the first and third answers can be eliminated. Both verbs are in the future tense which means the second answer can now be eliminated. The last answer is the correct tense, the correct translation and shows the correct pronoun.
4. El sol HACE mi abuela TOSER.
[ ] he makes, she tosses
[ ] it makes, it coughs
[x] it makes, to cough
[ ] the sun has, grandmother takes
This one might be a little tricky. The sentence reads: The sun makes my grandmother cough. This means that the first verb hace means makes and is in the present tense. The next verb is cough. The grandmother will cough if she is in the sun but we do not know this is happening now. It is not an active verb so it remains a base verb. In other words, the literal translation would be: The sun makes my grandmother [have to] cough. When 'to' comes before a verb, it is a base form verb. The pronoun for sun is the indirect pronoun of 'it'. The third answer shows the correct verbs, the correct translation and the correct pronouns.
5. ASUMÍ lo peor, pero lo ERA lo mejor.
[x] I assumed, it was
[ ] I assume, it is
[ ] he assumed, he was
[ ] he assumes, it was
This sentence reads: I assumed the worst but it was the best. The first verb’s form shows you that it is in the 'I' pronoun form. This now means that the third and last answers can be eliminated. The second verb has 'lo' before it and 'lo' is the indirect pronoun for 'it'. Both verbs are in the past tense. The first answer is the correct tense and shows the correct pronouns.
6. Los niños BAILARÁN y los profesores CANTARÁN.
[ ] the children will pay, the teachers will teach
[ ] they bailed, they carried
[x] they will dance, they will sing

The correct answer must show the pronoun form which means that the first answer can be eliminated. Both verbs are in the future tense. The third answer is the correct tense, the correct translation and shows the correct pronouns.
7. Nuestro equipo GANÓ, pero su equipo PERDIÓ.
[ ] I won, he lost
[ ] it won, it lost
[ ] our won, his lost
[x] they won, they lost
This sentence reads: Our team won, but their team lost. Next you need to determine the pronoun that can replace our [nuestro] team (that would be they) and their [su] team (would also be they). Both verbs are in the past tense. The last answer is the correct tense and shows the correct pronouns.
8. El sacerdote ABRE el servicio con una oración antes él ANUNCIA el tema.
[ ] he is able, he will answer
[x] he opens, he announces

This sentence reads: The priest opens the service with a prayer before he announces the topic. Next you need to determine the pronoun that can replace the priest. That would be he. The second pronoun he has been given. Both verbs are in the present tense. The second answer is the correct tense, correct translation and correct pronoun form.
9. Roberto y yo DIVORCIAREMOS si RESOLVEMOS todo.
[x] we will divorce, we solve
[ ] they will divorce, we will resolve
[ ] they divorced, they resolved
[ ] we will divorce, we will solve
This sentence reads: Robert and I will divorce if we solve everything. You’re you need to determine the pronoun that can replace Robert and I. Since 'I' is included the pronoun will be we for both verbs. The first verb is in the future tense and the second verb is in the present tense. This means that the second, third and last answers can be eliminated as they show incorrect verb tenses and pronouns. The first answer is the correct tense, the correct translation and the correct pronouns.
10. Usted TOCA mi corazón y eso me HACE feliz.
[ ] you try, I made
[ ] you talk, it has
[ ] you take, he makes
[x] you touch, it makes

For the second verb, the word 'that' (que) becomes the indirect pronoun 'it'. Both verbs are in the present tense. The first answer can be eliminated as it shows a past tense verb and the third answer can be eliminated as it shows the pronoun for he. The last answer is the correct tense, the correct translation and the correct pronouns.
