Since Prehistory the Thames has played a key role in the development of civilization in Britain. From the earliest times it was used as a source for food, for transport, as a geographical boundary, and still serves these purposes today. Today the Thames boasts three areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is the only river in the European Union that has a national trail following its entire length.
