The German Schlieffen Plan was put into action in August 1914 and Germany attacked France, before turning on Russia. Both Germany and Austria-Hungary fought Russia on the long Eastern Front until the end of 1917. The new Bolshevik regime in Russia made an early peace with Germany and withdrew from World War One in March 1918.
