Fascinating Fact:

Some words need suffixes, like -ed, -ing, -er, and -est. These endings change a word but the root word is still there.

In KS1 English Spelling, Year 2 pupils learn that words can be built by adding prefixes and suffixes. A spelling review helps you practise choosing the right ending, keeping the root word clear, and spelling familiar words correctly.

  • Root word: The main word that stays the same when you add an ending, like help in helped.
  • Suffix: Letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning or tense, like -ed or -ing.
  • Tense: Shows when something happens, like now, yesterday, or tomorrow.
What is a suffix in Year 2 spelling?

A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word. In Year 2, children often practise suffixes like -ed, -ing, -er, and -est.

How do I know which suffix to use, -ed or -ing?

Use -ed to show something already happened, like jumped. Use -ing to show something is happening now, like jumping.

What is a root word and why does it matter?

A root word is the main part of a word. Spotting the root word helps you spell longer words, because you keep the root the same and add the correct ending.
