Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947. He wrote as a teenager and had his first publication in 1967 when a short story, The Glass Floor, was included in a magazine. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1970, with a B.A. in English, and soon after began working as a teacher.

King’s first novel Carrie was published in 1974 and others followed including Salem's Lot, The Shining and Misery. Thus far King has written 55 novels and 11 collections of short stories.
