Fascinating Fact:

4/4, called common time, has four crotchet beats per bar. The letter C also means 4/4.

In Specialist Music Theory Grade 1 Time Signatures, you’ll read meters such as 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4. You’ll learn how bars group beats, where the strong beat falls, and how the lower number shows the beat unit.

  • Time signature: Two numbers that tell you how many beats are in a bar and which note value gets one beat.
  • Bar: A group of beats separated by barlines; the first beat is usually the strongest.
  • Beat unit: The note value counted as one beat (e.g., 4 = crotchet, 2 = minim, 8 = quaver).
What do the numbers in a time signature mean?

The top number shows beats per bar. The bottom number shows the beat unit: 4 = crotchet beats, 2 = minim beats, 8 = quaver beats.

How do I count 3/4 and 2/4 in Grade 1?

Count 3/4 as “1-2-3” with a strong “1.” Count 2/4 as “1-2,” again with a strong “1.” Keep the pulse steady and even.

What is cut time and how is it different from 4/4?

Cut time (alla breve, shown as a C with a vertical line) means two minim beats per bar. 4/4 has four crotchet beats per bar.
