(quiz starts below)

Venus has a thick atmosphere that traps heat, making it the hottest planet in our Solar System despite not being the closest to the Sun.

Planets are large, rounded objects that orbit a star. In our Solar System, the inner planets are mostly rocky, while the outer planets are mostly gas or ice giants, and many have moons, rings, and powerful magnetic fields.

  • Orbit: The curved path an object follows as it travels around another object, such as a planet going around the Sun.
  • Atmosphere: A layer of gases surrounding a planet, which can affect weather, temperature, and what can survive there.
  • Dwarf planet: A round object that orbits the Sun but has not cleared other objects from its orbital path.
What is the difference between a planet and a dwarf planet?

A planet is round, orbits the Sun, and has cleared most other objects from its orbit. A dwarf planet is also round and orbits the Sun, but it shares its orbital area with other objects.

Why do some planets have rings?

Planetary rings are made from countless small pieces of ice, rock, or dust orbiting the planet. They can form from material left over after the planet formed, or from broken moons or comets.

How long does it take a planet to orbit the Sun?

The time a planet takes to orbit the Sun is called its year. Planets closer to the Sun have shorter years, while planets farther away take much longer to complete one orbit.

[ ] Inquisitive
[x] Curiosity
3. Who was the first human to orbit Earth?
[ ] Vladimir Komarov
[x] Yuri Gagarin
[ ] Alexey Leonov
[ ] Valeri Polyakov
He was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He orbited Earth on 12 April 1961
4. What is the name of Neptune's largest moon?
[x] Triton
[ ] Titan
[ ] Poseidon
[ ] Nereid
Triton is the only large moon in the Solar System to orbit 'backwards'
5. Makemake is the creator of humanity and god of fertility in the mythos of the Rapanui. Where are the Rapanui from?
[ ] Guam
[x] Easter Island
[ ] Hawaii
[ ] South Sandwich Islands
Makemake was chosen in part to preserve the object's connection with Easter
6. A very rare event in astronomy is the passage of one planet in front of another, as seen from Earth. What is this known as?
[x] Occultation
[ ] Bi-location
[ ] Stridation
[ ] Defixation
Mercury and Venus occult each other every few centuries, and the event of May 28, 1737 is the only one historically observed. The next occultation of Mercury by Venus will be on December 3, 2133
7. How many Earth years is Pluto's orbital period?
[ ] 228 years
[x] 248 years
[ ] 268 years
[ ] 288 years
8. Who composed the classical suite called 'The Planets'?
[ ] Edward Elgar
[ ] Franz Liszt
[ ] Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
[x] Gustav Holst
Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age, is one of the seven movements of the suite
9. A well-known feature of Jupiter is the 'Great Red Spot'. What is this?
[ ] A volcano
[ ] A whirlpool
[x] A storm
[ ] A scorched desert
Mathematical models suggest that the storm is stable and may be a permanent feature of the planet
10. Who wrote the best-selling book, 'Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus'?
[ ] James Black
[ ] Jerry Greene
[ ] Joseph White
[x] John Gray
The book has sold more than 7 million copies and is reported to be one of the best selling self-help books of all time
