Story - Buying Candy

Gregory wandered around the corner to the convenient store to quickly buy the sugar his mother needed to bake the cake. She had sent him and told him to return immediately. Gregory always took his time. Gregory paid for the sugar and decided he would look around the store. Even though he was supposed to return the extra money from the sugar to his mother, he thought he might be able to spend the money. He could just tell his mother that the store raised the prices on their sugar.

Gregory went up and down the aisles looking at the candy and the few toys that the store carried. He rolled the two quarters in his hand. What could he buy for only two quarters? Most of the items on the candy aisle would cost more than fifty cents.

Gregory located a small pack of gum that was only forty cents. He picked it up and placed it on the counter.

"Forty-seven cents!" the clerk said sleepily. Gregory threw the money on the counter happily. Gregory pocketed the three cents and ran out of the store. With a smile on his face, he rounded the corner and ran into a dog. Without thinking twice, the dog snatched the gum out of his hand and took off in the other direction.

"Hey, that's mine!" Gregory yelled after him. Pouting Gregory walked home, thinking of what he would tell his mother about the missing change.
