The liquid that forms seas and lakes is water. Water is lifted from the surface of the Earth by evaporation. It then cools and through condensation forms clouds. These clouds when cooled further release their water as rain, sleet, hail or snow. It then falls back down to Earth and finds its way back to the sea through rivers. This process is called the water cycle.

Water is essential to life and without it all animals and plants would die. Seas are made up of saltwater, whereas rivers are mostly freshwater. Water can be solid (ice), liquid (the sea) and gaseous (steam from a boiling kettle). Pure water is tasteless and odorless.

This quiz tests what you know about the water cycle - from evaporation, through condensation and rainfall and then back to the seas and oceans.

Geography: Elementary School: Grades 3, 4 and 5 Quiz - Water (Answers)
1. What is the cycle that ensures we do not run out of water?
[ ] Washing cycle
[ ] Carbon cycle
[x] Water cycle
[ ] Life cycle
Water rises as vapor from the sea and the ground and forms as clouds. It then falls again as rain
2. What is the process called when water turns into a gas and rises into the sky?
[x] Evaporation
[ ] Corrosion
[ ] Distillation
[ ] Condensation
Sunshine and wind can both cause evaporation. That's how wet clothes dry on a washing line - the sun and wind evaporate the water in them
3. What is the process called when the gas cools and forms clouds?
[ ] Evaporation
[ ] Corrosion
[ ] Distillation
[x] Condensation
When water vapor cools it forms droplets. The mist formed if you breathe on a mirror or window is condensation
4. What happens to the waste water from our homes?
[ ] It runs into rivers
[ ] It runs into the sea
[x] It is cleaned at the sewage works
[ ] It soaks into the ground
The sewage works removes things like paper, fat, soap and human waste from the water
5. Which is NOT an essential use for water?
[ ] Drinking
[ ] Toilets
[ ] Watering crops
[x] Filling a wading pool
Wading pools are for fun rather than a necessity
6. Where is nine tenths of the Earth’s water?
[x] In oceans
[ ] In rivers
[ ] In reservoirs
[ ] In lakes
There are five oceans in the world
7. Why can we NOT drink sea water?
[ ] It is dirty
[x] It contains salt
[ ] It is needed by fish
[ ] It doesn’t taste nice
Salty water can make us very sick
8. Why should water be treated before we drink it?
[x] It can carry disease
[ ] It tastes better
[ ] So the water company can charge us
[ ] To make it clear
Many people around the world die from water borne diseases
9. Which water issue is NOT a problem that causes death for people around the world?
[x] Garden hose ban
[ ] Drought
[ ] No clean water to drink
[ ] No sanitation
A hoepipe ban is a method we use to preserve water when there is a shortage
10. What is caused by too much rain falling at once?
[ ] Drought
[ ] Rivers
[x] Floods
[ ] Dirty water
Floods can cause rivers to burst their banks and cause devastation
