Fascinating Fact:

In the imperial system, converting units can be trickier, since 16 ounces make a pound and 14 pounds make a stone.

In KS3 Maths, you compare imperial and metric units and convert between them. You will meet common pairs such as inches to centimetres, miles to kilometres, and pints to litres, then choose sensible methods for real problems.

  • Imperial units: Older units used in the UK and USA, for example inches, feet, miles, ounces, and pints.
  • Metric units: Decimal units based on tens, for example millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, grams, and litres.
  • Conversion factor: A number you multiply or divide by to change from one unit to another.
How do I convert inches to centimetres quickly?

Multiply inches by 2.54 to get centimetres. For a quick estimate, multiply by 2.5, then add a little. Example: 8 inches × 2.54 = 20.32 cm.

What is the easiest way to change miles to kilometres?

Multiply miles by 1.6 for a good estimate or by 1.609 for accuracy. Example: 5 miles ≈ 8 km, exactly 8.045 km with 1.609.

When should I use metric instead of imperial in the UK?

Use metric for science and most measurements at school and in shops. Imperial is still common for road distances in miles and some body measures.
