In order to make a word, you need to choose the correct letters. In this series of 11plus verbal reasoning quizzes you have to find the word that completes group b in the same way as the word in brackets completes group a.
You will find a pattern between the two words in the first group, like the 1st letter from the 1st word being followed by the same numbered letter from the 2nd word. These can be quite tricky to work out, so a pencil and paper is a good idea to help you.
Once you've cracked one question, you should find the rest a whole lot easier. There are four quizzes of this type so if you haven't played the first three yet, go back and do them first!
If you are puzzled, take a good look at the example to get you started.

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 'e' in idea is 3 and the 'o' in crop is 7. The correct answer is sold because epic = 3815. If we use the same numbers on last and demo we get sold. Epic means on a grand scale, or in a very widespread, sweeping way. We can get epic novels and epic movies, which cover a wide range of geography, history or character

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 'a' in flat is 3 and the 'i' in snip is 7. The correct answer is ales because naps = 6385. If we use the same numbers on yolk and safe we get ales. Ales is an oldfashioned word for beers. The kind we like is ginger ale

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 'a' in liar is 3 and the 'o' in doom is 7. The correct answer is pert because dial = 5231. If we use the same numbers on tern and pack we get pert. This one requires a little bit more thought because doom has 2 'o's. It doesn't change the answer though, because we were only using one letter from the second word!

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 'n' in band is 3 and the 'u' in slum is 7. The correct answer is spar because dubs = 4715. If we use the same numbers on ants and ripe we get spar. It is unknown where the word slum comes from, but it may be from the same source as the word 'slumber' meaning to doze. So a slum would have been a house of poor quality where sleeping was the only possible use for the building

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 'l' in help is 3 and the 'a' in stag is 7. The correct answer is nook because lath = 3761. If we use the same numbers on king and toot we get nook. Toot is an example of onomatopoeia, which means when a word's meaning is a sound. Can you think of other examples of onomatopoeia? Some ideas are hidden in an answer below

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 't' in late is 3 and the 'a' in pear is 7. The correct answer is shop because peal = 5621. If we use the same numbers on poll and show we get shop. The answer could have been slop if the sequence was 5421 (or 5471), however it wasn't one of the choices, so only shop works

If we give each letter a number from 1 8, the 'd' in node is 3 and the 'l' in milk is 7. The correct answer is thee because kind = 8613. If we use the same numbers on even and shot we get thee. A little more thought is required for this question because 'e' is repeated in the first word. The answer to the puzzle in question 5? Flop, whoosh, splish and splash are all examples of onomatopoeia. Can you think of more?
