In the Eleven Plus Verbal Reasoning exam, children may be asked to answer some questions about words. What kind of questions? Well, very simple ones really. As long as your child can use a dictionary, knows the difference between consonants and vowels, and can count, then they should find them very easy indeed!
Even basic questions like these can trip up the unwary though. Anybody who rushes through their paper can make a sloppy mistake, so maintaining focus is essential. That’s why we’ve created this series of multiple-choice quizzes, to help children practise their technique and stay alert for pitfalls.
So, take your time and read each question carefully before you choose your answer. An example question is given at the start of the quiz to show you what is required. Good luck!
Example:
Look at the words below and then answer the question about them.

None of the words contain the letter ‘U’, but all the other vowels (A, E, I and O) appear at least once. ‘U’ is the least often used vowel in many English words
|
‘Animal’ and ‘albino’ both begin with ‘A’, so we move on to the second letter. ‘L’ comes before ‘N’ in the alphabet, so ‘albino’ appears before ‘animal’ in a dictionary

‘I’ appears five times - that’s more than any other vowel, so is the correct answer
|
Looking at the first letters of each word, ‘L’ is later in the alphabet than ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘I’ so ‘limits’ would appear last in a dictionary

‘L’ appears four times - that’s more than any other consonant, so is the correct answer

None of the words contain the letter ‘O’, but all the other vowels (A, E, I and U) appear at least once

Three of the words start with an ‘M’, so we must look at their second letters. ‘Medium’ and ‘menace’ both have ‘E’ as their second letter, which comes before ‘I’, so we now look at their third letters. ‘D’ comes before ‘N’ in the alphabet so ‘medium’ will appear before ‘menace’ in a dictionary
|
‘E’ appears seven times – much more often than any other vowel. ‘E’ is in fact the most often used letter in English

‘P’ comes later in the alphabet than ‘M’ so the answer will be either ‘pelmet’ or ‘pander’. If we look at their second letters, ‘A’ comes before ‘E’ so ‘pelmet’ would be listed last in a dictionary
|
‘L’ appears four times. That’s more than ‘M’, ‘P’ or ‘T’ (twice)
