In the previous quiz we learnt about pronouns and, more specifically, about personal pronouns. We found out that personal pronouns are of two types namely, subject form and object form. We also learnt that some of the pronouns are dependent on gender and we use different pronouns for males and females. In this quiz we take a look at another class of pronouns known as possessive pronouns.
There are fourteen possessive pronouns: MY, OUR, HER, THEIR, THEIRS, OURS, ITS, HIS, HERS, YOUR, YOURS, MINE, WHOSE and ONE’S. Possessive pronouns, as their name suggests, relate to ownership. In English we are aware of the genders and singular and plural forms. We know that we use certain specific words when we talk about a male person and certain other specific words when we talk about a female person. Similarly we use certain words when we talk about something in the singular form and certain other words when we talk about something in the plural form. We also use certain words when we talk about non-human things. Thus, the use of pronouns is governed by gender and also by singular or plural forms and whether the subject is a person or an object.

‘This house belongs to Sunita,’ can be written as:
‘This house is HERS,’ as Sunita is the name of a girl and it is the singular form.
‘This house belongs to James,’ can be written as:
‘This house is HIS,’ as James is the name of a boy and it is the singular form.
‘This house belongs to Sunita and James,’ can be written as:
‘This house is THEIRS,’ as Sunita and James together are in the plural.
‘The table’s leg is broken,’ can be written as:
‘ITS leg is broken,’ as the table is a thing and it is in the singular form.
‘The tables’ legs are broken,’ can be written as:
‘THEIR legs are broken,’ as the tables are things and they are in plural form.
Possessive pronouns are useful to communicate to the reader or listener who owns what. The quiz that follows will explain possessive pronouns more clearly.
