Primary School English Quiz - Unjumbling Words (Questions)

English has a vast collection of words and often we have to consult a dictionary to learn the meaning of them. The basic units of the language are the letters of the alphabet. The alphabet consists of 5 vowels and 21 consonants which have specific symbols for easy identification. Each letter also has a specific sound that is used for pronunciation. Groups of letters are arranged in a specific order to complete words and these orders are called spellings.

Spellings determine the unique identity of each word and specific sounds determine its pronunciation. Words are then put together in a specific order to form a sentence which conveys a unit of information. Several sentences are grouped in a paragraph and several paragraphs constitute a complete message or idea.

Since there are 26 letters in the alphabet, words can be in any combination and of any length. Thousands of words are found in English and a lot more are added as newer words are introduced, either on their own or borrowed from other languages. All these words are catalogued scientifically into a dictionary which is the repository of all words in the English language. The dictionary is able to help all users of English in understanding the meaning of the words, their origin and their pronunciation. Some dictionaries also give synonyms and antonyms. With the advent of online dictionaries a dictionary is now easily accessible to all.
