Primary School English Quiz - Verbs 08 - Irregular Verbs (Questions)

In the previous quiz we learnt how to identify verbs and classify them and we also learnt how to change from active voice to passive voice and vice versa. We were exposed to regular and irregular verbs and also auxiliary verbs, which we use to change the voice forms. We learnt that there are variations in the verbs when we look at different tense forms. Your learning of verbs would not be complete if we did not expose you to many more irregular verbs!

You may have come across verbs such as COMPLETE, CALL and FRY. These verbs follow certain rules when we use them in the simple past and past participle forms. For instance, COMPLETE becomes COMPLETED, CALL changes to CALLED and FRY becomes FRIED. Words such as FRY are changed by a slight alteration – removing the Y and adding IED. Such words are called regular verbs. However, we also come across certain words which follow different rules!.

SPEAK and SING do not follow any rules and have their own unique forms. In the case of SPEAK the simple past and past participle forms are SPOKE and SPOKEN respectively. Similarly SING becomes SANG and SUNG.

There are some verbs which have the same simple past and past participle forms. Words in this category are GRIND-GROUND-GROUND, PAY-PAID-PAID and SPEED-SPED-SPED.

Yet other words, like CUT and BET do not have any forms apart from their base forms and never change, which means that the same verb is utilized in all the tense forms. 'Speak', 'sing', 'cut', ‘grind’, ‘pay’, ‘speed’ and 'bet' are all IRREGULAR VERBS.

The only way to learn irregular verbs is to use such words as often as possible. In order to help you build your vocabulary of irregular verbs and their respective simple past and past participle forms the quiz that follows exposes you to 40 of them. Let's find out how many of these you know.
