Travel between two places has always fascinated human beings and probably started with the first man and woman. There are many stirring stories that are recorded in history which tell us that, whatever the period, travel has been an integral part of any society. In India we are taught in our history lessons that great travellers such as Megasthenes from Greece graced Chandragupta Maurya’s court 2300 years ago. Over 1600 years ago the Chinese scholar Fa-Hien visited India to study Buddhism. Without the inquisitiveness of Christopher Columbus would America be the same place that it is today?

Travel in the olden days was predominantly an activity to search for new trade opportunities and to locate new trade routes. Over a period of time travel became a means to understand more about religion and culture in far off lands. With an increase in travel came the development of new modes of transport. Ships and horses were once the main methods of transport but in time we saw the emergence of trains, automobiles and finally aeroplanes.
