Fascinating Fact:

Change challenge: Pay £1 for a 70p sticker. You get 30p change like three shiny tens.

In KS1 Maths, children recognise UK coins and notes, match values, and count in steps to make totals like 10p, 20p, 50p, and £1. They also practise finding simple change by counting on from the price to the amount paid.

  • Coin: Metal money such as 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, and £2.
  • Note: Paper or polymer money such as £5, £10, £20, and £50.
  • Change: Money returned when you pay more than the price.
How do I count coins to make £1?

Use coins that add to 100p. For example: two 50p, five 20p, ten 10p, or a mix like 50p + 20p + 20p + 10p.

What is change in Year 1 maths?

Change is the money you get back after paying. Count on from the price to the amount paid to find the difference.

Which UK coins do children learn first?

Children learn 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, and 50p, then £1 and £2, recognising values and using them to make totals.
