Fascinating Fact:

Objects can be hard or soft, like a hard brick or a soft cushion, depending on their material.

In KS1 Science, children learn that every object is made from a material, such as wood, metal, plastic or fabric. Different materials have properties that make them suitable for certain uses.

  • Material: What something is made from, like wood, glass, metal, plastic or fabric.
  • Object: A thing we can see and touch, such as a cup, chair, toy or window.
  • Property: A feature of a material, such as hard, soft, stretchy, waterproof or see-through.
What is a material in KS1 science?

In KS1 science, a material is the substance an object is made from. For example, a spoon might be metal, a bottle plastic, and a jumper made from wool.

How do I know which material is best for an object?

We look at the material’s properties. For example, strong and waterproof materials are best for raincoats, while soft and squishy materials are better for pillows and cushions.

Why do we learn about objects and materials in KS1?

Learning about objects and materials helps children understand why things are made the way they are and gives them early skills for fair tests and scientific investigations.
