Fascinating Fact:

Most music collections sort songs alphabetically by artist or title, making it easier to choose what to play.

In KS2 English, pupils learn to place words in alphabetical order to help with dictionary work, organising lists, and finding information faster in books or databases.

  • Alphabetical Order: Arranging words according to the order of letters in the alphabet, from A to Z.
  • Dictionary: A reference book or digital tool that lists words in alphabetical order and explains their meanings.
  • Sorting: The process of putting items into a specific order, such as by name, number, or category.
What does alphabetising mean in KS2 English?

Alphabetising means arranging words or items in the order of the alphabet, starting with A and ending with Z.

Why do we use alphabetical order?

We use alphabetical order to make it easier to find words in dictionaries, locate names in lists, and organise information clearly.

How can I alphabetise a list correctly?

Compare the first letter of each word. If they are the same, look at the next letter, and keep going until the order is clear.
