Practise your spellings with this KS3 quiz. "The greatest masterpiece in literature is only a dictionary out of order." - Jean Cocteau.
Did you know that a dictionary is not like a rule book for language? Instead, it preserves and stores knowledge about how people use language. This is because language changes over time and words change too, in their definitions, in their pronunciation and in their spelling. Good dictionaries show how particular words have been used at different times in history, so that you can see exactly how they have changed and all of the different shades of meaning they express.
New words are also added to the dictionary every year. For example, dozens of new words were added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2017, including the noun, "hatemonger". It's useful to check dictionary definitions of words you don't know, but it's also important to pay attention to context so that you understand how a word is being used.
