"I do love perusing the dictionary to find how many words I don't use - words that have specific, sharp, focused meaning. I also love the sound of certain words. I love the sound of pom-pom." - Geoffrey Rush

"Perusing the dictionary" has a nice sound to it, doesn't it? What makes "perusing" different from "examining", or "scrutinizing"? Each of these words refers to looking closely and in detail. But "perusing" also carries with it a sense of time, even of leisure. So that when someone refers to "perusing" a book, they might be closely examining or they might be skimming over the detail in a slightly unfocussed manner. If this were the sense a writer wanted to convey, she would choose "perusing" over a word such as "scrutinizing". It is a good idea to develop an awareness of the many shades of meaning conveyed by a word so that your own language use becomes precise.
