"Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer." - William S. Burroughs.
Would you be surprised to learn that the word "answer" derives from the Old Germanic for "and swear"? You probably don't consider yourself to be swearing when you answer a question. This word is a wonderful example of the way that language changes over time. One older meaning for the English "answer" relates to legal vocabulary. Someone who is accused of a crime must "answer the charge". Here you can see that "and swear" makes sense. Now, of course, "answer" means a response to any type of question. Next time you take a maths exam, you might like to think of yourself as swearing to the truth of your answers!
