Of course, such a word as "life" introduces the idea that in English it is not always possible to "sound the word out". Children learn quickly that the i sound of "I" and "life" is not the same as the i of "if" and "it".

After learning the sound made by the i-e digraph, children quickly master words such as "knife", "prize" and "mine". If only there were always a single way to write each sound, spelling English words would be so simple! The young child pleased at being able to spell "life" soon must face -ie- -ei- and -igh- spellings, too!
