Fascinating Fact:

A suffix goes at the end of a word and often changes its job, teach becomes teacher which names a person.

In KS3 English, you study how prefixes and suffixes build vocabulary. Prefixes add meaning to the start of a root, while suffixes at the end often change the word’s class or function.

  • Prefix: Letters added to the start of a root to change meaning, for example replay or untie.
  • Suffix: Letters added to the end of a root that can change meaning or word class, for example teacher, kindness, hopeful.
  • Root word: The base part of a word that carries the core meaning, such as cycle in bicycle.
What is a suffix in KS3 English?

A suffix is a set of letters added to the end of a word. It often changes the word’s job, for example teach to teacher or happy to happiness.

What does a prefix do to a word?

A prefix goes before the root and changes meaning. For example, re- means again in redo, and un- means not in unfair.

Do prefixes and suffixes change word class?

Prefixes usually keep the same word class but change meaning, while suffixes often change class, such as teach (verb) to teacher (noun) or help (verb) to helpful (adjective).
