Fascinating Fact:

Adding s often keeps one beat, cats, dogs, books, and maps are still one syllable.

In KS3 English, you listen for vowel sounds to count syllables. Many short words are monosyllables. When you add a simple plural s, the number of beats usually stays the same.

  • Syllable: A single beat in a word made by one vowel sound.
  • Monosyllable: A word with one beat, for example cat, dog, book.
  • Plural s: An ending that makes more than one, usually without adding another beat.
Does adding s change a one syllable word to two syllables?

Usually no. Plurals like cats, dogs, and books still have one syllable because the ending s does not add an extra vowel sound.

How can I count syllables in short words?

Say the word slowly and listen for vowel sounds. If you hear one vowel sound, clap once. That is one syllable, as in cat or maps.

Are there exceptions where an ending adds another beat?

Yes. Endings that add a new vowel sound can add a beat, such as ed in wanted. Simple s usually does not add a vowel sound.
