These sums are really little equations, which you will do many of in math. An equation is when you have to balance the numbers on each side of the equal sign, so sometimes it helps to think of the sum as being in two parts. If you can work out the numbers on the left of the equal sign, the numbers on the right will make sense.

Example:

26 + 7 = 18 + ?

14
15
16

Answer: 15

This is because 26 + 7 = 33. 18 + ? = 33. This makes 15 the only possible answer.

Math: Elementary School: Grades 3, 4 and 5 Quiz - Verbal Reasoning - Complete the Sum 3 (Answers)
1. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

33 ÷ 11 = 7 - ?
[ ] 14
[ ] 24
[x] 4
[ ] 41
This is because 33 ÷ 11 = 3, and 7 - 4 = 3. Only 4 works. It is good to know your 11 times tables, and in secondary school you will need your tables all the way up to 12 x 12
2. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

81 ÷ ? = 3 x 3
[x] 9
[ ] 7
[ ] 4
[ ] 2
This is because 3 x 3 = 9. 81 ÷ 9 = 9. 81 is a square number, and a pretty interesting one. All the nine times tables will result in an answer that adds up to 9! 9 x 3 = 27 (2 + 7 = 9) try some out and see how it works
3. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

72 + ? = 150 - 12
[ ] 36
[x] 66
[ ] 56
[ ] 65
This is because 150 - 12 = 138. 138 - 72 = 66
4. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

23 x 3 = 69 - ?
[ ] 10
[ ] 20
[x] 0
[ ] 11
This is because 23 x 3 = 69. 69 - 0 = 69. Tricky? Sometimes a 0 is used in equations, not to catch you out, but to let you know that 0 is a number, not just nothing!
5. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

900 ÷ ? = 220 + 5
[ ] 12
[ ] 32
[ ] 41
[x] 4
This is because 220 + 5 = 225. 900 ÷ 4 = 225 so only 4 works. What are all the numbers that will divide equally into 225? Read below for the answer
6. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

56 + ? = 14 x 5
[x] 14
[ ] 13
[ ] 15
[ ] 16
This is because 14 x 5 = 70 and 70 - 56 = 14. Only 14 can work
7. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

67 + 19 = 43 x ?
[ ] 4
[ ] 3
[ ] 1
[x] 2
This is because 67 + 19 = 86 and 43 x 2 = 86 so only 2 will work. The answer to the little quiz in question 5? The factors (numbers which will divide equally into) of 225 are 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 25, 45, 75 and 225. Well done if you got them all!
8. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

12 x 12 = 44 + ?
[ ] 104
[x] 100
[ ] 88
[ ] 188
This is because 12 x 12 = 144 and 44 + 100 = 144. 144 is an interesting number because it is the square of 12, and it is also known as a 'gross' - an old term for a dozen dozen!
9. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

568 - 562 = ? + 1
[ ] 13
[ ] 12
[x] 5
[ ] 2
This is because 568 - 562 = 6, which is 5 + 1
10. Find the number that will complete the sum below correctly.

3 x 1,000,000 = 3,000,001 - ?
[ ] 1,000,000
[ ] 3
[ ] 2
[x] 1
This is because 3 x 1,000,000 = 3,000,000 and 3,000,001 - 1 = 3,000,000. Only 1 works. It doesn't matter how big the numbers might seem, the mathematics is always just add, subtract, multiply and divide
