Roald Dahl was born on the 13th of September 1916, in Llandaff, Cardiff, to Norwegian parents. He attended boarding schools in Weston-Super-Mare and Repton and then began working for Shell Petroleum Company in Africa. During World War II Dahl joined the RAF and shot down 5 enemy aircraft, qualifying him as a fighter ace.

His first published writing was, A Piece of Cake, in 1942. His first children's book, Gremlins, followed a year later. He went on to write 17 children’s books in all, as well as 2 adult novels, 3 books of children’s poetry, 9 works of non-fiction, 1 play, 1 radio serial and 6 film scripts – not to mention numerous episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and Tales of the Unexpected for American and British TV. He died on the 23rd of November 1990 at the age of 74.
