Fascinating Fact:

Collective nouns can be singular or plural in British English. The team is winning or the team are celebrating.

In KS3 English, you revisit singular and plural nouns, including tricky collective nouns like team, class, and government. Writers choose singular or plural to match meaning and keep subject verb agreement clear in formal and creative work.

  • Singular noun: Names one person, place, or thing, for example story.
  • Plural noun: Names more than one, formed in many ways, for example stories, children, sheep.
  • Collective noun: A group word that can be treated as one unit or as individuals, for example team, jury.

When should a collective noun take a singular or plural verb?

Use a singular verb when the group acts as one unit, for example The team is winning. Use a plural verb when members act separately, for example The team are arguing.

What are the most common ways to form plural nouns?

Most add s or es. Some change the word, for example child to children. A few stay the same, for example sheep and species.

How do I avoid mistakes with subject verb agreement?

Find the true subject and match number. Ignore words between subject and verb, and decide whether a collective noun is acting as one unit or as individuals.
