This KS3 Geography quiz asks questions about Australia. For at least 40,000 years before European settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians distinguished as either Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. They lived in hunter-gatherer communities and lived off the land. As with the majority of indigenous people, they lived sustainably and developed.
Australia has a lot of mineral resources, including gold. It also proved to be suitable for raising cattle and sheep. When the early settlers from Europe found gold, diamonds and other precious gemstones, they drove the native Australians from their lands. The same happened as large farms (first mainly sheep and then later, cattle) were developed. Some of the Aboriginals were killed and some died from diseases brought over by the settlers to which they had no resistance. As more settlers arrived, the main cities grew around the natural harbours.
