An adverb modifies the meaning of a verb, an adjective and other adverbs. Adverbs often tell us when, where, why, how or under what conditions something happens or happened. Adverbs frequently end in 'ly'. Look at the following sentence. 'John ran across the street.' The verb here is 'ran'.

Now let's add an adverb. 'John quickly ran across the street.' Not only do we know that John ran but with the added adverb we now know how he ran. He ran 'quickly'.
Here is another example of a sentence without an adverb and then with an adverb.
'She arrived at the dance.' - 'She arrived at the dance late.'
In the first sentence the verb is 'arrived'. In this sentence we only know that she arrived at the dance but in the second sentence we learned when she arrived. She arrived 'late'.
