However, now that you are in middle school, your vocabulary word bank will increase to a whole new proportional level, in fact, it will explode with words! Middle school English is heavily focused on developing your reading comprehension and learning to write well.

A lot of your English lessons will have you reading, writing book reports, doing research papers, writing essays and even teaching you how to articulate in a more clear and precise manner. You really have all of the foundation work behind you with learning what words are (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, propositions and so on) and learning sentences and sentence structures (simple, compound, complex and compound-complex), and how to formulate a paragraph. With all of this knowledge, however, your best tool in both reading and in writing is to have a good wealth of vocabulary. The more vocabulary you have, the more your written work and spoken word will set you apart from others.

As building your vocabulary is so important this year, you will find a number of quizzes here that will test your skills. If you find words that you don’t know, then pull out a dictionary and see what the word means. Then try to use it in a sentence. Do this a few times until you are comfortable with the word. Then retake some of the vocabulary quizzes and see how much you can improve your score. Once the new words are mastered, you can start using those words to impress your friends and, more importantly, you can impress your teachers!

For this quiz, there are ten sentences given below and four words for each sentence that could possibly fit into the sentence. See if you can find the correct word without having to look it up in a dictionary. You might surprise yourself to learn that you are more familiar with words than you initially thought. So, are you ready? Then go ahead and take the following vocabulary quiz.
