An “equation” in math is a specific formula used to find an answer. In a simplified equation, there are only two parts that are joined by the equal “=” sign. For example: X = Y. The letters “X” and “Y” are often referred to as “expressions.” The expression on both sides of the equal sign will have the same value.

In order to solve an equation, we need to know what one of the expressions is. Let’s look at the next equation.

X = 6 + 2

To solve this equation we need to add 6 + 2 and the answer is 8. This then tells us that “X” is “8” because:

8 = 6 + 2

This shows that both expressions have the same value.
