When measuring the height, length, width and depth of an object you are measuring its dimension or volume (sometimes referred to as its space). When measuring the dimension of an object such as a room size, the dimension is two dimensional. This means you are measuring two areas such as the length of the room and the width of the room. When you do this you will find the square foot of the room.

When you measure the volume of an object, again let’s look at a room, you are measuring three areas such as the length of the room, the width of the room and the height of the room. The answer you will get with this type of measurement is the “cubic foot” of the room.

Height: To find the height of any given object, you need to locate the lowest or bottom part of the object and then find the top of the object. Think of height as measuring how “tall” something is.

Length: To find the length of any given object, you need to locate its longest side. Think of length in terms of distance. How far is it from point “A” to point “B”?

Width: To find the width of any given object, you need to locate how wide. Think of looking at a river from one side (bank) to the opposite side (bank). You would measure from bank to bank to get its width.

Depth: To find the depth of any given object, you need to locate how deep it goes. Think of looking into a well and seeing the water below. The measurement from the top of the well to the top of the water level would be the depth of how far down the water is located.

We can measure height, length, width and depth in inches, feet and yards. Let’s say you are 66 inches tall. If you are 66 inches tall, how many feet tall are you? As there are 12 inches in one foot we need to divide 66 inches by 12 or 66 ÷ 12 = 5 feet with a remainder of 6 or 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Now let’s look at width. If a street is 0 inches on one side and 196 inches on the opposite side, how wide is the street in terms of yards? We know one foot equal 12 inches and one yard equals 36 inches so we can now divide 196 by 36 or 196 ÷ 36 = 5 yards with a remainder of 16 inches. There are 12 inches in one foot so we can convert the 16 inches into 1 foot 4 inches. Therefore the width of the street would be 5 yards 1 foot and 4 inches.

Both of these examples require measuring only one object. When you measure two objects the measurement is multiplied to get a square foot. For example, let’s look at a room that is 12 feet long and 10 feet wide. We multiply the length by the width or 12 x 10 = 120. This would mean that the room area is 120 square feet. This would be good to know if you wanted to buy carpet for the room as carpet is sold in square foot sections.

Math: Middle School: Grades 6, 7 and 8 Quiz - Measurements - Height, Length, Width and Depth (Answers)
1. Mr. Jones wants to rent a building that is 140 feet long and 65 feet wide. What is the square footage of the building?
[ ] 2.15 square feet
[ ] 205 square feet
[ ] 7,000 square feet
[x] 9,100 square feet
Your two dimensions are 140 feet long and 65 feet wide so we multiply 140 x 65 = 9,100. The building contains 9,100 square feet. Answer (d) is correct
2. If I wanted to buy hardwood floors for my living room and the living room is 18 feet long and 13 feet wide and the price per square foot is $11.75, how much will the hardwood floor cost me?
[ ] $234.00
[x] $2,749.50
[ ] $364.25
[ ] $245.72
Your two dimensions are 18 feet long and 13 feet wide so we multiply 18 x 13 = 234. The living room contains 234 square feet. The price of the hardwood floor is $11.75 per square foot so now we have to multiply 234 by 11.75 so, 234 x 11.75 = 2,749.50. Answer (b) is correct as the cost of the hardwood floor would be $2,749.50
3. I want to plant a vegetable garden that is 22 feet long and 12 feet wide. What would the square footage of my garden be?
[ ] 144 square feet
[ ] 240 square feet
[x] 264 square feet
[ ] 232 square feet
Your two dimensions are 22 feet long and 12 feet wide so we multiply 22 x 12 = 264. The vegetable garden has 264 square feet of growing space
4. A group of hikers decided to descend into a cave. They used a rope that was 25 yards and it just reached the bottom of the cave. How deep is the cave in terms of feet?
[x] 75 feet
[ ] 50 feet
[ ] 8 feet 3 inches
[ ] 300 feet
You only have one dimension to work with here but you know that dimension is 25 yards. There are three feet in 1 yard so we multiply the yards by feet or 25 x 3 = 75. The cave is 75 feet deep. Answer (a) is the correct answer
5. If a building is 5 stories high and each story is equal to 4 yards, how many feet high is the building?
[ ] 20 feet high
[ ] 40 feet high
[x] 60 feet high
[ ] 80 feet high
We know that there are 3 feet in 1 yard so we need to multiply 4 yards by 3 feet or 4 x 3 = 12. This tells us that each story of the building is 12 feet. We now have 5 stories so we again must multiply 12 feet by 5 stories or 12 x 5 = 60. The building is 60 feet high. Answer (c) is the correct answer
6. The gym teacher wants to buy new floor mats to cover the gym’s floor. The gym is 50 feet long and 32 feet wide. The gym mats sell for $4.50 a square foot. How much will it cost the gym teacher to cover the gym floor with mats?
[ ] $81.00
[x] $7,200.00
[ ] $6,800.00
[ ] $369.00
Your two dimensions are 50 feet long and 32 feet wide so we multiply 50 x 32 = 1600. The gym contains 1600 square feet. The price of the mats are $4.50 per square foot so now we have to multiply 1600 by 4.50 so, 1600 x 4.50 = 7200. Answer (b) is correct as the cost of the mats to cover the gym floor would be $7,200.00
7. We need to know what the square footage of our pool table is to see if it will fit in our family room. The table is 7 feet wide and 14 feet long.
[ ] 21 square feet
[ ] 74 square feet
[ ] 92 square feet
[x] 98 square feet
Your two dimensions are 7 feet wide and 14 feet long so we multiply 7 x 14 = 98. The pool table covers an area of 98 square feet. Answer (d) is correct
8. How would you like to build a pool in your back yard? If your pool is going to be a rectangle and the width is 21 feet and the length is 43 feet, what would be the square footage of the pool?
[ ] 640 square feet
[x] 903 square feet
[ ] 64 square feet
[ ] 128 square feet
Your two dimensions are 21 feet wide and 43 feet long so we multiply 21 x 43 = 903. The pool contains 903 square feet. Answer (b) is correct
9. The contractor wanted to make sure the foundation of the house was at least 9 feet deep from the sill to the ground. How many yards deep is the foundation?
[x] 3 yards deep
[ ] 6 yards deep
[ ] 18 yards deep
[ ] 27 yards deep
You only have one dimension to work with here but you know that dimension is 9 feet. There are three feet in 1 yard so we need to divide 9 feet by 3 or 9 ÷ 3 = 3. The foundation is 3 yards deep making Answer (a) is the correct answer
10. In redecorating your home, you want to cover one wall with wallpaper. The wall is 16 feet wide and the height is 9 feet. The wallpaper is $.89 per square foot. How much will the wallpaper cost you?
[ ] $144.00
[ ] $189.00
[x] $128.16
[ ] $156.24
Your two dimensions are 16 feet wide and 9 feet high so we multiply 16 x 9 = 144. The wall is equal to 144 square feet. The price of the wallpaper is $.89 per square foot so now we have to multiply 144 by .89 so, 144 x .89 = 128.16. Answer (c) is correct as the cost of the wallpaper to cover the wall would be $128.16
