Math: Middle School: Grades 6, 7 and 8 Quiz - Shapes 6 (Answers)
1. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[ ] Square
[ ] Rectangle
[x] Circle
[ ] Parallelogram
I hope you got this one right
2. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[ ] Vertex
[ ] Edge
[x] Point
[ ] Face
'Point' can't normally be used to describe the properties of a shape
3. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[ ] Rectangle
[ ] Rhombus
[ ] Oblong
[x] Trapezium
All the other shapes are parallelograms
4. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[x] Parallel
[ ] Intersect
[ ] Cross
[ ] Cut
'Parallel' means that two or more things, e.g. lines, do NOT cut, cross, or intersect
5. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[x] Reflex angle
[ ] Acute angle
[ ] Right angle
[ ] Obtuse angle
This is the only angle that CAN'T be used to construct a triangle: a reflex angle is an angle greater than 180° but less than 360°
6. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[x] Cylinder
[ ] Cube
[ ] Cuboid
[ ] Square-based pyramid
The cylinder is the only shape that uses curved shapes in its construction: the top and the base are circles and the wall of the cylinder is curved
7. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[ ] Square
[x] Trapezium
[ ] Rhombus
[ ] Rectangle
Only one pair of sides is parallel
8. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[x] Pentagon
[ ] Hexagon
[ ] Octagon
[ ] Decagon
The pentagon has an odd number of sides (5), hexagon (6), octagon (8) and decagon (10)
9. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[ ] Height
[ ] Elevation
[x] Slope
[ ] Altitude
All the other words have to do with height. 'Slope' tells you how much something slants upwards or downwards
10. Which one of the following is the odd man out?
[ ] Diameter
[ ] Radius
[ ] Circumference
[x] Tangent
All the other words can be used to describe the properties of a given circle: this is not so for 'tangent'. A 'tangent' can be thought of as a line that touches a curve without crossing it
