I don’t think you need to be a scientist to figure out that the human body cannot exist without blood. Blood is, in fact, the life force of the human body. It is part of the connective tissue and it is made up of plasma, red bloods cells, platelets and white blood cells. The blood is also responsible for regulating the body’s temperature. Although when you look at veins they appear to be blue, blood is actually red. The skin’s filtration make the blood appear to be blue.

Now let’s take a look at the different parts and functions of the blood.

Plasma is the fluid in the body which is a mixture of water, minerals, nutrients, sugars, proteins and other substances.

Red blood cells carry oxygen to every cell in the body. This makes up the bulk of blood.

Platelets are larger cells that are found in bone marrow. The platelets’ function is to form blood clots when bleeding so as to stop the body from losing too much blood.

White blood cells help to fight and then destroy pathogens. White blood cells also carry and release antibodies to help the body fight bacteria and other foreign invaders.

Pathogens are bacteria, viruses and other microscopic particles that make the body ill.

Blood pressure is the amount of force exerted by the flow of the blood on the walls of the arteries.

Each person has a specific blood type that they inherited from their parents. There are four basic blood types that include: A, B, AB or O. Mixing blood types can be fatal so it is important that you know which blood type you are.

5. Which of the following is NOT a blood type?
[x] AO
[ ] AB
[ ] B
[ ] O
The four blood types are A, B, AB and O. AO is NOT a blood type. Answer (a) is correct
6. This is the body’s life force.
[ ] Water
[x] Blood
[ ] Oxygen
[ ] Food
Although water, oxygen and food are necessary for the body to survive, blood is the body’s life force. Answer (b) is correct
7. Its function is to form blood clots when bleeding so as to stop the body from losing too much blood.
[ ] White blood cells
[ ] Red blood cells
[ ] Pathogens
[x] Platelets
The function of platelets is to form blood clots when bleeding in order to stop the flow of blood and to prevent the body from losing too much blood. Answer (d) is correct
8. These carry oxygen to every cell in the body.
[ ] White blood cells
[ ] Veins
[x] Red blood cells
[ ] Circulatory system
The red blood cells carry oxygen to every cell in the body. There are more red blood cells than there are white blood cells. Answer (c) is correct
