Yup, Spanish has prepositions too! Do you remember what a preposition is? A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. Prepositions tell us what is happening and when it is happening. In Spanish there are simple prepositions and complex prepositions. For now, we will focus only on some of the simple prepositions.

Another thing to note here is that in Spanish, a preposition does not always have one direct relationship to an English preposition but, rather, replaces or is used in place of several English words.

So now let’s look at some prepositions.

Spanish Preposition English Equivalent How It Is Used
a at, to In Spanish, 'a' (sounds like a short 'a') is used as in, 'He went TO the store' and 'He was AT the store.'
ante before, in the presence of In Spanish, 'ante' is used as in, 'He went BEFORE the counsel' and 'He was IN THE PRESENCE OF greatness.'
bajo under, below In Spanish, 'bajo' is used as in, 'Her shoes were UNDER the bed' and 'His skills were BELOW average.'
con with He went WITH his father to buy a car.
contra against, in exchange for In Spanish, 'contra' is used as in, 'He went AGAINST his father’s wishes' and 'IN EXCHANGE FOR answers he was paid money.'
de of, about, from Pronounced as 'day'. In Spanish, 'de' is used in 'House OF red' and 'He received a letter FROM his best friend' and 'It was ABOUT 10 o’clock.'
en in, into, by, inside, within In Spanish, the word 'en' is used in place of each of these English equivalent words.
hasta until, as far as, till This word is pronounced as ă-stă. The 'h' is totally silent. An example would be 'Hasta luego' which means 'Until later.'
por for, because of, in order, through, per Pronounced as 'poor'. In Spanish, 'por' is used in place of each of these English equivalent words or phrases.
sin without I cannot go WITHOUT my mother’s permission.

As these prepositions are very frequently used, study them well. You will be using them quite often as you learn to start saying sentences in Spanish, both short and long sentences. Yes, that’s a little ways off at the moment but before you know it, you will have amassed quite a large number of Spanish vocabulary words to start talking in simple sentences.
