In the Spanish Easy Review quiz series you learned about the days of the week and the months of the year. Now, in the Spanish Medium Review quiz series you will be looking at the four seasons of the year. Everyone usually has a favorite season. Do you have one? Which season is your favorite? In Spanish that question would be asked as: ¿Cuál es tu estación favorita? This literally translates as: Which is your season favorite? As the word favorite is an adjective it comes after the direct object of season.
Okay, let’s just jump right into this new round of vocabulary words to see what the four seasons of the year are in Spanish. First, however, the Spanish word for season is estación and it is a feminine word.
ENGLISH | SPANISH |
---|---|
winter | invierno [m] |
spring | primavera [f] |
summer | verano [m] |
fall / autumn | otoño [m] |
One thing to make note of here is that in Spanish the definite article (el / la [the]) is generally always used with the season whereas in English it is not. For example, in English we would say: It is summer in English. However, in Spanish we would say: Es el verano. This translates as: It is the summer. You really would not tend to see or hear it spoken as 'es verano'. However, technically it would not be considered to be incorrect to do it that way. If you do not use the definite article, a native Spanish speaker would definitely know that you are not a native speaker yourself.
Now, moving on to the quiz questions below, your task will be pretty simply. You will be given ten different events that take place in different seasons. From the list of seasons listed below each event, locate the correct season that the event will take place in. Practice saying each season over and over again (using the definite article and watching for spelling) so that you can become very comfortable with them.
