British Birds [show/hide]

Here in the UK we are extraordinarily lucky in having such a diverse range of birdlife - over 250 species are spotted each year.  We have Swallows that choose to fly all the way from South Africa to spend their summers with us and geese that travel thousands of miles to spend their winters with us. On top of that we have a varied range of garden birds to give us pleasure each and every day of the year.

We are also lucky in having so many people who appreciate wild birds. Approximately one in every 60 people are happy to contribute £36.00 upwards to the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) every year in order to help them with their objectives of preserving wild birds and their habitats.  The RSPB is the largest conservation charity in Europe.

All too often we take for granted the things that we know well......  Chaffinches are amongst the most colourful small birds in the world but being one of our most common birds we often go about our daily lives without ever really noticing them. Swallows are a miracle of aerodynamics but on a hot summer's day they go about their business performing seemingly impossible aerial manoeuvres without the people around them paying the least attention.  Our greatest hope at Education Quizzes is that we can encourage people to take more notice of our wonderful British Birds and to TREASURE them.

Some of the birds in our quizzes you will see every day whilst others you may never see in a lifetime and this gives us a few problems deciding which birds to put in which quizzes. This is how we have tackled the problem:  We have 5 quizzes under the broad titles of Garden Birds.... and these are the ones that will be of most interest to casual birdwatchers - they contain birds that are familiar to most of us. Four quizzes under the titles of Miscellaneous..... contain a mixture of common and rare birds but by a process of deduction and elimination you should get most of the answers correct.  The other 21 quizzes are broken down into logical groups each containing the usual 10 questions; most of these will contain some birds that you know but unless you are an expert you will almost certainly by foxed by some of them.

You can find an alphabetical list of all the photograpers who have so generously contributed images at British Bird Photographers

How To Play [show/hide]

Each quiz consists of 10 questions and each question has 4 multiple choice answers. At the top of each quiz you are given a choice of how you want to play it and this affects what happens when you provide an incorrect answer. You can either have the correct answer given immediately, or you can choose to have the questions presented again at the end of the quiz. To print any of the Key Stage 3 quizzes (both questions and answers) click the “Print” link at the bottom of the quiz.
