Phonics - Graphemes (2-letter)
It might be helpful to say each word out loud and listen to the sound it makes.

Phonics - Graphemes (2-letter)

This quiz on graphemes helps KS1 children learning English and Literacy recognise two letter vowel sound groups. A grapheme is a symbol that identifies a certain sound/phoneme. Certain sounds fit within the same group. This quiz will help children identify which sounds should be grouped together.

Sometimes, two letters together make a sound - these sounds can often be grouped. This means there are two letters, like 'oy' that make that sound. There is also 'oi' which involves two different letters but it makes the same sound. Sounds like these are called graphemes.

  1. This is a picture of a tie. Which letters also make the 'ie' sound?
The 'ie' sound is the same as 'y' - like try, fry and cry.
  2. This is a picture of some houses. Which letters also make the 'ou' sound?
This kind of 'ow' is like how and now.
  3. This is a picture of some coins. Which letters also make the 'oi' sound?
When spelling, try out different sounds. If the word is coin - and you're not sure which 'oi' to use, try both. Write 'coyns' then 'coins' and see which one looks right to you.
  4. This is a picture of autumn. Which letters also make the 'au' sound?
Both these sounds make the 'or' sound and so does 'aw' as in, claw.
  5. This is a picture of people walking. Which letters also make the 'al' sound?
This is quite a tricky one - 'al' makes an 'au' sound but sometimes we want to pronounce the 'l' making it 'all' but you should only do this if there is another 'l'.
  6. This is a picture of a pew. Which letters also make the 'ew' sound?
This sound is in fuel, which is a material that is burnt to make energy.
  7. This is a picture of some seats. Which letters also make the 'ea' sound?
The word seat is made up of the sounds: s + ea + t. The 'ea' makes the same sound as 'ee'.
  8. This is a picture of a bow. Which letters also make the 'ow' sound?
'Ow' can make two sounds, so you'll need to sound out both versions and see which word sounds most familiar. It could have been bow, as in ribbon, or bow - as in, take a bow after a performance.
  9. This is a picture of some hay. Which letters also make the 'ay' sound?
Hay is grass that has been cut and dried. Farmers roll or gather the hay and use it for feeding cattle.
  10. This is a picture of a steak. Which other letters make the 'ea' sound?
The 'ea' sound can also look like 'ay' - as in hay and play.
