They can also create a certain feeling in the reader. In this quiz, the students will read a story and analyze photographs that accompany each part of the story. Then the students will answer questions about the story and the photographs.

Read the first part of the story - A Sound in the House. Look at the picture.
Tina wakes up. She looks around her room. It is the middle of the night. Tina can’t sleep. She hears a sound.
What mood is created from this story and picture?
Mad.
Fear.
Sad.
Unsure.
The girl is fearful from the expression on her face and because she looks around.

Tina thinks. She will go find the sound. She knows she can find it.
How does Tina change?
She changes from being scared to being brave.
She changes from being happy to being mad.
She changes from being in her house to being outside.
She changes from being mad to being happy.
Tina changes by becoming brave and going to look for the sound.

She quietly walks out of her room and looks around. She sees nothing. She listens more. She needs to see where the sound is coming from.
How is Tina listening?
Carefully.
Angrily.

In an excited way.
Tina carefully listens so she knows where the sound is coming from.

She hears a sound. It doesn’t sound like an animal or a monster. It sounds like a door is opening. Tina shakes a little.

Tina walks down the stairs. The lights are off, but a light shines brightly in the room.

With the picture, the reader sees that Tina is in the kitchen.

Tina’s dad is standing in front of the fridge. He is looking for something to eat.

Tina will never find out what the noise is.
A robber is in Tina's home.
The noise is not a scary noise.
Tina should still be scared.
The noise is not a scary noise since the noise is from her dad opening the refrigerator.

Tina smiles. She had an idea. Her dad does not hear her. She quietly walks behind her dad.
What is Tina going to do?
She is going to go back to bed.

Tina will most likely walk up behind her dad and scare him.

“Boo!” Tina says. Her dad jumps. Tina laughs.

The mood is now sad.
The mood is now scary.
The mood is now funny.
The mood is now angry.
The mood is now funny because the girl scared her dad and she thinks it is funny.

How does her dad react?
He probably thinks it is funny.
He is probably angry with Tina.
He is scared of Tina.
He is sad that Tina did that.
Tina's dad probably thinks it was funny because he offered her food.

Tina nods her head and the two eat a snack in the middle of the night.

The mood is joyful with the two eating together.
