Grade 4 Reading Literature - Sentence Openers 2

This English Language quiz is called 'Sentence Openers 2' and it has been written by teachers to help you if you are studying the subject at elementary school. Playing educational quizzes is an enjoyable way to learn if you are in the 3rd, 4th or 5th grade - aged 8 to 11.

This quiz is going to concentrate on the use of sentence openers in complex sentences. Instead of starting your sentences with 'the' all the time, try using some different sentence openers. First, you need to know what a simple sentence is: it's a sentence that consists of a single subject and a single predicate; there are no clauses, e.g. 'David likes rugby': 'David' is the subject, 'likes rugby' is the predicate and 'likes' is the predicate verb.

A complex sentence consists of a simple sentence joined with one or more dependent clauses, e.g. 'He was early for work because he caught the 7 o'clock train'. A dependent clause is a clause that is not a complete thought; therefore, it cannot stand alone as a sentence, e.g. 'because he caught the 7 o'clock train' makes you ask 'What happened?' Always try to use complex sentences in your writing: it will be more interesting than just using simple and compound sentences. It would be a good idea to do the Clauses and Phrases and the Complex Sentences quizzes before you do this elementary school English quiz. Enjoy yourself!

The Sound

At 9 p.m., I crawled in bed and quickly went to sleep. It was easy to do because I had worked for 10 hours today moving heavy boxes up three flight of stairs to my friend’s new apartment. Then I had to travel half an hour back to my house. I watched television for an hour and then decided to go to bed.

A whispering sound emerged about three hours since I went to bed. I woke up startled by the noise. I looked around my room to determine where the sound was coming from. I gulped. I strained to hear what the sound was. Was it whispering? Was it noise from the air conditioner? Was it an animal scratching?

After listening for ten minutes, I decided to go investigate. Tiptoeing, I crept outside my bedroom and into the hallway. The whispering was slightly louder. Then I moved toward the stairs and stepped down each step. As the sound got louder and louder, I shivered more and more. However, I knew I needed to find out who or what was uninvited to my house. Realizing the sound was coming from my family room, I entered the room and saw the television had been left on. I sighed with relief and quickly turned off the television.
