Question: How long do 7-16 year olds spend online every day?
Answer: Approximately 3 hours – The same age group spends 2.1 hours watching TV each day which has dropped from 3 hours in 2000
It is beginning to seem as though the “almighty” television is slowly becoming a thing of the past due to technological advancements on the internet – which essentially now enables users to watch whatever they want, whenever they want.
Although the average time for online consumption is three hours per day, among 15 to 16-year-olds it rises to almost five hours!
Video streaming On Demand
Video streaming has made such a huge impact on societies viewing habits. This is especially the case with the younger generation.
Among the young people who spend more time playing and socialising online than watching TV, the Netflix on-demand service was much more popular than any conventional television channel.
This comes as no big surprise to me as I am yet to find someone who doesn’t like the idea of a viewing service that allows you to watch TV whenever you please – Instead of having to tailor your life around TV.
Smart devices are making the internet even more accessible and convenient – including watching television shows! 60% of the 7-16 year-olds are now watching TV via their smartphone, tablet or laptop rather than the conventional method.
I must admit, although I am sadly no longer a part of this age range, I most certainly am an individual who enjoys watching videos on my phone and tablet. The internet offers so much choice in the form of entertainment, and smart devices offer a platform to view these on.
Although I do enjoy watching TV on my phone/tablet, I do have to say that I definitely prefer watching television on a television set – purely because the viewing experience is much more immersive on a larger device, however the clear disadvantage to a television set, is you cannot pick it up and put it in your back pocket.
