Grade 1 Reading Literature - Stories and Facts

This English Language quiz is called 'Stories and Facts' and it has been written by teachers to help you if you are studying the subject at elementary school. Playing educational quizzes is a fun way to learn if you are in the 1st or 2nd grade - aged 6 to 8.

There are primarily two different types of books that first graders learn. These are fiction and nonfiction. First graders need to learn the difference between these two types of books. They also need to learn the different information that can be found in fiction and nonfiction books. This quiz has students determine what they would find in a fiction book and a nonfiction book.

A pig talks.
The food a pig eats.
A dog and a pig are friends.
A pig cooks food.
This book would contain facts about a pig's diet.

What would you see in a book that tells a story?
A carrot walks.
A carrot is a vegetable.
The color of carrots.
Carrots grow in the ground.
Stories contain events that can't happen. In this case, a carrot can't walk.

What would you see in a book that gives information?
A tree grabs people with its branches.
A tree laughs.
A tree becomes a boy.
A tree needs sunlight to grow.
This statement is a fact about trees that would be included in a nonfiction book.

What would you see in a book that tells a story?
The number of bones in your neck.
How long your neck is.
A monster with a long neck.
Giraffes have long necks.
Since this is a fictional story, a monster would not be real so it would be in a story.

What would you see in a book that gives information?
A soccer ball and a boy become friends.
A talking soccer ball.
A soccer ball comes alive.
How to play soccer.
This would show the rules about playing soccer which would be in a nonfiction book.
6.
What would you see in a book that tells a story?
A dog talks.
The tricks dogs can learn.
The food a dog should eat.
How to care for a dog.
A talking dog would not be real so this would be in a story.
7.
What would you see in a book that gives information?
An ant and a bear start helping each other.
Where ants live.
Ants start dancing to a song.
An ant cries because he is sad.
The habitats for ants would be found in a nonfiction book.
8.
What would you see in a book that tells a story?
The number of planets in space.
How far away stars are from Earth.
A spaceship from Mars.
The sun is a star.
A spaceship from Mars is not real so you would see that in a story.
9.
What is a book that tells a story?
Nonfiction.
Fiction.
Art book.
Math book.
Fiction books tell stories that are not real.
10.
What is a book that gives information?
Nonfiction.
Fiction.
Poem.
Comic book.
Nonfiction books contain real facts about certain topics.
