Grade 2 Reading Literature - Rhythm and Rhyme

In poetry and some stories, patterns are created. Some writers like to use a technique called alliteration. Alliteration is when the first letter of two or more words start with the same sound. An example would be, ‘silly snake’. Both words begin with an ‘s’. Now test your knowledge on alliteration.

In the following question, select the words that are necessary to complete the alliterations.

'fought' preserves (keeps) the alliteration's f-sounding rhythm

Which of these answers shows alliteration?
Great giant giraffes.
Amazing lovely giraffes.
Big friendly giraffes.
Adorable tall giraffes.
The first answer shows three words beginning with 'g'. The three words don't always have to be next to each other but they should be within the same sentence.

In the following question, select the words that are necessary to complete the alliterations.
"The ... smell of success."
fragrant
pleasant
wholesome
sweet
'sweet' preserves (keeps) the alliteration's s-sounding rhythm. By the way, here is a useful definition: 'wholesome' means nutritious, good, hearty, or health-giving

Read the poem. Why does the poem have rhythm?

Mother and brother and sister and children
Happy and joyful and grateful and relaxed
The poem is about a mother and her children.
There are two beats and then 1 beat.
Many of the nouns and adjectives begin with the same letter.
The nouns and adjectives repeat.
One word has two syllables and the next word has one syllable.

Read the poem. How does the alliteration in the poem make the poem have rhythm?

Betty brought me breakfast
But it was bad
Because it was burned
The words have only 1 syllable in them.
The poem is funny about the burned breakfast.
A lot of the words have the same beginning sound of 'b'.
It is about eating breakfast.
Alliteration is when several words begin with the same letter. Betty, brought, breakfast, but, bad, because and burned all begin with the letter “b”.

Read the poem. Which word is important in the poem?

Do your best, always, always, always
Be kind to others, always, always, always
best
kind
others
always
The word 'always' is repeated six times, so this shows importance.
7.
Read the poem. How does the poem have rhythm?

The boy said his name.
I called and he came
To play a fun game
Because it was all the same
The last word of each line rhymes.
The poem is about a boy playing a game.
The poem has many words that begin with 'a'.
The repeated words give the poem rhythm.
Each line of the poem ends with a rhyming word. These rhyming words give the poem rhythm.

Read the story. Why do the words repeat?

Bobby ran to the tree. He climbed up, up, up the tree. He could see for miles. His mother called Bobby’s name. Bobby climbed down the tree and ran to his house.
The next day Bobby walked up, up, up the street to meet his friends. He played with them and had a wonderful time. It was time to go home now.
When Bobby’s mother called him, Bobby ran up, up, up to his mother. He didn’t want to be late for supper.
So it rhymes with other words.
To show what Bobby is doing.
To show importance.
So the beginning of the words are the same.
Repeating words and phrases are used to show importance. In the story, the author shows where he is going.

Read the poem. Which words rhyme?

It is not a good day
Because it is today.
go, away
away, play, day, today

These words rhyme because they end with the same sound. It is a long 'a' sound.

Read the story. Why is the 6th sentence of the story important to the meaning of the story?

Beverly threw her clothes on the floor. She was very tired. The next morning her mother got angry that her room was a mess. Beverly’s mother yelled at her to pick up her clothes off the floor. Beverly was in a hurry. She started to sing a song, 'Clean up, Pick up, Tidy up.' Every time Beverly sang the word 'up,' she would pick up a piece of clothing off the floor. Singing this song helped Beverly clean her room fast.
This shows Beverly’s problem.
Songs have rhythm.
Singing the song creates a rhythm in the story.
Singing the song helped Beverly solve her problem.
This song helped Beverly solve her problem. She could clean her room faster.
