An “equation” in math is a specific formula used to find an answer. In a simplified equation, there are only two parts that are joined by the equal “=” sign. For example: X = Y. The letters “X” and “Y” are often referred to as “expressions.” The expression on both sides of the equal sign will have the same value.

1.
Y = 16 x 17
272
33
-1
273
16 x 17 = 272. There are no negative numbers to be found so Answer (c) is not correct. The correct answer is Answer (a), Y = 272
2.
X = 234 - 197
431
421
47
37
234 - 197 = 37 so X = 37. Answer (d) is correct
3.
Y = 10 + 78
-68
68
88
780
10 + 78 = 88. There are no negative numbers to be found so Answer (a) is not correct. The correct answer is Answer (c), Y = 88
4.
X = 15 + 57 - 18
90
54
837
39
15 + 57 = 72 - 18 = 54 so X = 54. Answer (b) is correct
5.
X = 7 x 9
63
16
-2
61
7 x 9 = 63. There are no negative numbers to be found so Answer (c) is not correct. The correct answer is Answer (a), X = 63
6.
X = 41 x 8
33
328
49
348
41 x 8 = 328 so X = 328. Answer (b) is correct
7.
Y = 12 x 12 - 36 + 11
191
97
119
98
12 x 12 = 144 - 36 = 108 + 11 = 119 so X = 119. Answer (c) is correct
8.
Y = 56 - 23
79
33
1288
-33
56 - 23 = 33. There are no negative numbers to be found so Answer (d) is not correct. The correct answer is Answer (b), Y = 33
9.
X = 14 + 3
42
11
17
16
14 + 3 = 17 so X = 17. Answer (c) is correct
10.
X = 28 + 7
36
196
21
35
28 + 7 = 35 so X = 35. Answer (d) is correct
