There are a lot of zeros in this quiz!

Measurements - Metric System - Conversions Revisited

This Math quiz is called 'Measurements - Metric System - Conversions Revisited' and it has been written by teachers to help you if you are studying the subject at middle school. Playing educational quizzes is a fabulous way to learn if you are in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade - aged 11 to 14.

It costs only $12.50 per month to play this quiz and over 3,500 others that help you with your school work. You can subscribe on the page at Join Us

If you are on this quiz, hopefully you have already taken the Metric System - Review of the Basics quiz. If you have not done that quiz, please do go and check it out as it will be a great refresher of the very basics of the metric system and how it works. It also contains a reminder of a standard phrase to remember in order to remember the metric list of kilo to milli.

It is important to memorize the metric system listing because it is the foundation that will help you to convert from one measurement to the next.

Briefly, the metric system measurements include meters that are related to the measurement of length or distance, grams that are related to the measurement of mass and/or weight and, finally, liters that are related to the measurement of volume.

In converting from one measurement to the next you will need to move spaces up or down to find your answer, adding the appropriate zeros “0” to either the right or the left of the base number and, if necessary, a decimal point.

Again, if you have not taken the earlier metric quiz, you will probably want to do that first before moving forward. However, if you feel that you are ready to start converting, then look at the following 10 metric measurements and convert them by finding the correct answer.

1.
3,200 cm = ____ hm
3.200 hm
.0320 hm
.3200 hm
.000032 hm
As we are starting at the base unit of 3,200 centimeters and we need to convert to hectometers, we must move up the metric list. There are four spaces between the centimeter and the hectometer. This tells us that the decimal point will need to be moved four spaces to the left, i.e., 3,200 cm is the same as saying 3200.0 cm and when we move the decimal point four spaces to the left it will now become .3200 hm or .32 hm. Answer (c) is the correct answer
2.
13 l = ____ ml
13,000 ml
1,300 ml
.130 ml
130 ml
As we are starting at the base unit of 13 liters and we need to convert to milliliters, we must move down the metric list. There are three spaces between the liter and the milliliter, therefore, three zeros need to be added to the right of the base number making the answer 13,000 ml. Answer (a) is the correct answer
3.
4,567 dg = ____ dag
45,670 dag
4.567 dag
45.67 dag
.4567 dag
As we are starting at the base unit of 4,567 decigrams and we need to convert to decagrams, we must move up the metric list. There are two spaces between the decigram and the decagram. This tells us that the decimal point will need to be moved two spaces to the left, i.e., 4,567 dg is the same as saying 4567.0 dg and when we move the decimal point two spaces to the left it will now become 45.67 dag. Answer (c) is the correct answer
4.
981 g = _____ kg
9.81 kg
98.1 kg
.0981 kg
.981 kg
As we are starting at the base unit of 981 grams and we need to convert to kilograms, we must move up the metric list. There are three spaces between the gram and the kilogram. This tells us that the decimal point will need to be moved three spaces to the left, i.e., 981 g is the same as saying 981.0 g and when we move the decimal point three spaces to the left it will now become .981 kg. Answer (d) is the correct answer
5.
3 dal = ____ ml
300 ml
3,000 ml
30 ml
30,000 ml
As we are starting at the base unit of 3 decaliters and we need to convert to milliliters, we must move down the metric list. There are four spaces between the decaliter and the milliliter, therefore, four zeros need to be added to the right of the base number making the answer 30,000 ml. Answer (d) is the correct answer
6.
500 cm = _____ km
.00500 km
.500 km
50,000,000 km
500,000 km
As we are starting at the base unit of 500 centimeters and we need to convert to kilometers, we must move up the metric list. There are five spaces between the centimeter and the kilometer. This tells us that the decimal point will need to be moved five spaces to the left, i.e., 500 cm is the same as saying 500.0 cm and when we move the decimal point five spaces to the left it will now become .00500 km or .005 km. Answer (a) is the correct answer
7.
94 kg = _____ dag
940 dag
9,400 dag
.94 dag
9.4 dag
As we are starting at the base unit of 94 kilograms and we need to convert to decagrams, we must move down the metric list. There are two spaces between the kilogram and the decagram, therefore, two zeros need to be added to the right of the base number making the answer 9,400 dag. Answer (b) is the correct answer
8.
270 cm = _____ dam
270,000 dam
27,000 dam
.270 dam
.000270 dam
As we are starting at the base unit of 270 centimeters and we need to convert to decameters, we must move up the metric list. There are three spaces between the centimeter and the decameter. This tells us that the decimal point will need to be moved three spaces to the left, i.e., 270 cm is the same as saying 270.0 cm and when we move the decimal point three spaces to the left it will now become .270 dam. Answer (c) is the correct answer
9.
93 hl = ___ cl
9,300,000 cl
930,000 cl
93,000 cl
.0000930 cl
As we are starting at the base unit of 93 hectoliters and we need to convert to centiliters, we must move down the metric list. There are four spaces between the hectoliter and the centiliter, therefore, four zeros need to be added to the right of the base number making the answer 930,000 cl. Answer (b) is the correct answer
10.
75 kg = ______ mg
75,000,000 mg
75,000 mg
7,500,000 mg
750,000 mg
As we are starting at the base unit of 75 kilograms and we need to convert to milligrams, we must move down the metric list. There are six spaces between the kilogram and the milligram, therefore, six zeros need to be added to the right of the base number making the answer 75,000,000 mg. Answer (a) is the correct answer
