Food Groups - Age 5-7

One part of the Health section of PSHE is diet. In this quiz, written for children in KS1 (years 1 and 2) we look at the five food groups and how they can be good or bad for our health.

If you want to be fit and healthy, as well as exercise, you need to make sure you eat a balanced diet. A balanced diet is one which contains the right amount of each of the food groups. If you do not know what they are, then here's a list:

  • Fruit and vegetables
  • Carbohydrates
  • Fats and oils
  • Dairy produce
  • Protein

Bread is a carbohydrate that helps our bodies produce energy. Other carbohydrates are starchy foods such as pasta, rice and potatoes

Chicken is a meat and comes from the food group protein. Milk, cheese and yoghurt are all good sources of dairy to help keep your bones strong

Proteins help the body to grow and repair muscles helping to make us stronger. Protein can come from different sources including meat, fish and pulses

Dairy is a good source of calcium that helps keep our bones strong. Dairy can be found in some foods and some drinks

Fruits and vegetables are full of vitamins that help keep us healthy. We should eat at least 5 portions a day and they should make up a third of the foods we eat
