Reading Accessibility Filters

Why use coloured filters?

Reading black on white can be difficult for many children, especially those with ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia or sensory sensitivities. Studies have shown that colour filters can help improve focus and reduce visual stress. Even if you don’t have a condition sometimes just adding a filter can make using our website a more comfortable and relaxed experience.

This is why we introduced colour filters on Education Quizzes. With just a click, students can choose between green, blue, yellow or white background to find the filter that is best for them. These filters don’t change the quizzes, but they can make revising more enjoyable and less stressful.

How do I know which colour is best for me?

Everyone is an individual, so we can’t say which filter will be best for you or if you would be best with sticking to the original white background. Try each colour (see the foot of this page) to see what best suits you – aim for the colour that is most relaxing to read. It needs to be clear and steady.

Any advice for different conditions?

Dyslexia and visual stress

Around half of children with dyslexia also experience visual stress. Studies have shown that using coloured filters can reduce strain, improving reading speed and comfort. Blue and green filters, in particular, have been shown to support smoother eye movement, making reading less tiring.

Autism

Research has found that nearly 80% of autistic children read faster and clearer with coloured overlays compared to only 16% of children without autism. Many autistic learners also prefer softer or muted tones, while bright, intense colours can sometimes feel overstimulating.

ADHD

Some students with ADHD report that coloured filters help reduce visual distractions and improve concentration. Because sensitivity to colour can vary, it’s worth trying each option to see what feels most calming and supportive.

Other ways filters can help

Colour filters don’t just help neurodiverse learners. Many people with visual stress, migraines, or light sensitivity can find colour filters beneficial. The filters can reduce glare, ease eye strain, and help text appear steadier on the page, making reading more comfortable.

How it works

As a subscriber, you can set your preference of filter after clicking the “Your Account” link in the top right of any page.

As a visitor without a subscription, you can experiment with the filter selection panel below.  Once set, the colour filter will stay in place for the rest of the session.

Our commitment to accessibility

Education Quizzes is used by thousands of students every day. We’re continually improving the site to ensure that all children, whatever their needs, can benefit from fun, effective revision. The new filters are just one step in our ongoing commitment to accessibility.
