Fascinating Fact:

Adding the same number twice is just showing off, 4 + 4 could have been written as 2 × 4.

In 11 Plus Maths, pupils practise number skills through simple addition and subtraction. Learning how to combine and separate numbers helps them work faster and more confidently in timed exams.

  • Sum: The total you get after adding numbers together.
  • Difference: The result you get when one number is taken away from another.
  • Multiple: A number that can be made by multiplying another whole number.
Why is addition important in maths?

Addition helps us calculate totals, solve problems, and build the foundation for more complex maths such as multiplication and algebra.

What does subtraction mean?

Subtraction means taking one number away from another to find what is left or to work out the difference between them.

Are addition and multiplication connected?

Yes, multiplication is repeated addition. For example, 3 × 4 is the same as 4 + 4 + 4.

1 .
31 + 7 - 14 = ?
24
26
44
52
TIP: With numbers less than 100, add the tens first and then add the units. 31 + 7 - 14 = (30 - 10) + (1 + 7 - 4) = 20 + 4 = 24
2 .
27 - 18 = ?
8
9
11
12
You might have done this one in your head.
27 - 18 = (20 - 10) + (7 - 8) = 10 - 1 = 9
If you are adding -1 then you are simply subtracting 1
3 .
16 + 16 + 16 = ?
32
40
48
56
16 + 16 + 16 = (10 + 10 + 10) + (6 + 6 + 6) = 30 + 18 = 48. Obviously, if you know that 16 × 3 = 48 (not many of us know our 16 times table), you won't follow this procedure. Always BE ON THE LOOKOUT for short cuts
4 .
19 + 15 - 19 + 3 = ?
12
14
16
18
19 + 15 - 19 + 3 = (15 + 3) = 18
Cross out identical pairs of numbers that differ only in sign, e.g. +19 -19 = 0. Don't waste your time adding them to your final calculations
5 .
54 + 19 + 3 - 14 = ?
62
63
64
65
54 + 19 + 3 - 14 = (50 + 10 - 10) + (4 + 9 + 3 - 4) = 50 + 12 = 62
A quick way to add 19 is to add 20 then subtract 1
6 .
37 - 22 + 13 = ?
26
28
30
32
37 - 22 + 13 = (30 + 10 - 20) + (7 + 3 - 2) = 20 + 8 = 28
7 .
36 + 0 + 17 - 0 - 6 = ?
45
46
47
48
36 + 0 + 17 - 0 - 6 = (30 + 10) + (7) = 40 + 7.
Remember, zeros are worth nothing in addition and subtraction! You can also ignore the sixes because one is to be added and the other taken away
8 .
23 + 18 - 14 + 6 = ?
30
31
32
33
23 + 18 - 14 + 6 = (20 + 10 - 10) + (3 + 8 + 6 - 4) = 20 + 13 = 33
9 .
6 + 3 + 4 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 2 = ?
36
37
38
39
6 + 3 + 4 + 8 + 7 + 7 + 2 = (6 + 4) + (7 + 3) + (8 + 2) + 7 = 37. Try to group your numbers in lots of ten
10 .
56 + 17 - 12 + 3 - 5 = ?
57
58
59
60
56 + 17 - 12 + 3 - 5 = (50 + 10 - 10) + (6 + 7 + 3 - 2 - 5) = 50 + 9 = 59
